Christy W. Bell retired as in July 2012 from Horizon Healthcare, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey’s statewide HMO where he was the executive vice president of healthcare management, and president and chief executive officer. He was responsible for the contracting results and relationships with hospitals, physicians, and all providers in the Horizon networks and oversaw quality enhancement, care management, and pharmacy expenditures for all product lines. He also was responsible for the performance of Horizon’s 800,000 member HMO, which included substantial Medicare, Medicaid, and Commercial enrollment.
In addition, he was the chief executive officer of Horizon Healthcare Innovations, a Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey subsidiary which focuses on substantially redefining reimbursement paradigms for Horizon and New Jersey’s doctors and hospitals.
Christy is a seasoned executive with over 30 years industry experience. He has served as the executive director of Humana Medical Plan, Inc., of South Florida, and executive director of the Fallon Community Health Plan in Worcester, Mass., which was and still is consistently recognized as one of the top HMO’s in the country. Christy is also known for his key role in creating the country’s first Medicare HMO Risk contract in 1980 and first Medicare PPO demonstration plan in 2003.
He has published numerous articles on marketing, Medicare, and managed care. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Anna Maria College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School of Nursing and on the boards of The United Way, The Newark Boys Chorus School, YMCA, Girls, Inc., America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), Fairlawn Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital. Christy is also a member of the Duke University School of Nursing’s Board of Advisors.
Christy has a bachelor of arts degree from Hobart College, where he lettered in three sports. He served as a Deputy Missile Combat Crew Commander in the U.S. Air Force, is married and has three daughters. Daughter Elizabeth is a graduate of the Duke University School of Nursing and now works at the Duke University Medical Center.
Christy and his wife, Sue, have relocated to Southport, N.C., where they are enjoying their life as retirees.
