Ruth Dzau received a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy from McGill University. Since arriving in Durham in 2004, Mrs. Dzau has volunteered for a variety of causes. She currently serves on the Board of the Triangle Community Foundation and North Carolina New Schools.She also serves on the board of the Ruth K Broad Foundation at Duke University. She is Vice Chairman of the North Carolina Symphony's Society Board and the Chair of the Museum of Durham History. She is a member of the Durham Rotary. Mrs. Dzau served on the board of the Friends of the Nasher Museum and was Chair of the Center for Child and Family Health.
Mrs. Dzau's husband, Dr. Victor Dzau, was President and CEO of Duke University Health System, Chancellor of Health Affairs, and James B. Duke Professor of Medicine at Duke University. He stepped down from his leadership role at Duke on June 30, 2014, to start a six-year term as President of the Institute of Medicine,The National Academy, in DC.
The Dzaus have two daughters, Jacqueline M’09, and Merissa, a 2004 graduate of the University of Rochester. Jacqueline completed her medical internship and residency in Ophthalmology at Duke University. Merissa is a senior marketing manager at Corporate Ferragamo in Manhattan.
