Stelios Papadopoulos is an entrepreneur, investor, and advisor focusing on the biotech and pharma industries. He retired in 2006 as vice chairman of Cowen & Co., LLC, and before that he spent 13 years as an investment banker with PaineWebber, Inc., where he was chairman of PaineWebber Development Corporation, a subsidiary focusing on biotechnology.
Before his career on Wall Street, Stelios was on the faculty of the Department of Cell Biology at New York University Medical Center. He continues this affiliation as an adjunct associate professor of cell biology.
Stelios is also co-founder and chairman of the Board of Directors of Exelixis, Inc., and co-founder and member of the Board of Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Cellzome, Inc. He is vice chairman of the Board of Directors of BG Medicine and a member of the Board of Directors of Biogen, Inc.; Joule Biotechnologies, Inc.; and Regulus Therapeutics, Inc. In the not-for-profit sector, Stelios is a co-founder and chairman of Fondation Sante, a tax-exempt charitable foundation whose mission is to improve health and education for those in need. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Marrow Donor Program.
Stelios is married to Esperanza Bouza Papadopoulos, MD, a hematologist-oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center who specializes in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. They have a daughter, Alexandra, E’08, and live on Long Island.
