Thom Mayer is founder and CEO of BestPractices, Inc. He is former chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine, emergency medical services director, and director of flight services at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia.
He is one of the nation’s most widely known and respected speakers on leadership and management in health care.
Thom is the editor of eight major textbooks, including Emergency Department Management: Principles and Applications, the benchmark reference on emergency department leadership and management. He has written and spoken on a variety of topics, including continuous quality improvement, effective customer service in health care, pediatric emergency care, adult and pediatric cardiac care, and aggressive intervention for myocardial infarctions in the emergency department.
Thom is a recipient of the Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians. He helped co-found the Benchmarking Alliance in Emergency Medicine, which has helped establish distinct standards for the management of emergency medicine.
Thom holds an undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, from Hanover College and a medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. He completed training in pediatrics and surgery at the University of Utah and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Utah University Primary Children’s Medical Center.
Thom and his wife, Maureen, have three sons and live in Great Falls, Virginia.
